How to write a CAE essay/letter/report/proposal

I rate a student’s Writing Part 1 Essay, then give suggestions on simple tips to rewrite it. Can it is taken by us from a B to an A?

I also made a video about writing essays – begin to see the section below.

Our Videos about CAE Writing

A Skype chat with Marina in Italy – we discuss just how to plan the essay in part one of the CAE test that is writing. I emphasise the importance of planning, and my theory that you should not only plan your paragraphs, but also which structures you certainly will use and which vocabulary fits the topic.

In this video I put myself in my students’ shoes and try to write a CAE Writing Part 1 essay. Watch when I destroy my poor keyboard while writing an essay. Laugh as I fail to type the term ‘government’ 7 times out of 8. Cringe as I am rudely interrupted.

Grammar Mistakes

Most CAE students don’t make obvious, basic mistakes like your/you’re or its/it’s. But they do have a problem with such things as:

Relative clauses

You ought to learn the essential difference between defining and non-defining relative clauses. Your clauses that are non-defining commas, while your defining clauses shouldn’t have commas.

I had lunch with my grandfather, who is 90 yrs old. (the half that is second of sentence tells you more info on my grandfather. It really is bonus information, generally there has to be a comma.)

I had lunch with my buddy who lives in Prague. (i will be very cool and popular – I have a lot of friends. If I say ‘I experienced lunch with my friend’ you don’t know which friend i am talking about. Therefore the ‘who lives in Prague’ clause provides you with essential information. Therefore, no comma!)

Remember that pronouns that are non-defining be changed to ‘that’, therefore you should never write a comma followed closely by ‘that’. (this might be especially an issue for German speakers because in German you HAVE to use a comma before ‘that’.)

Gerund vs infinitive

Gerund means the -ing type of a verb. That is a part that is tricky of since there are no rules along with to understand every verb one at a time. English! Argh! Anyway, make certain you understand these structures:

I used to reside in China (= I lived in China).

I’m used to hearing German (= hearing German is normal for me).

I look forward to meeting you.

I stopped smoking (= I quit).

I stopped to smoke (= I stopped the things I was doing because I wanted to own a cigarette).

I suggest buying new computer equipment. (Suggest and advise will also be accompanied by gerunds.)

I would recommend you buy new computer equipment.

Prepositions

So hard! So prepositions that are many! So mistakes that are many! Just learn as many as you can easily and don’t forget, every student that is single has ever taken the CAE exam has struggled with prepositions. It’s not just you!

Conditionals

I will move to Zurich if I get the job. (The speaker is confident.)

If I got the task I would personally proceed to Zurich. (The speaker is certainly not confident.)

If I had got the job I would personally have relocated to Zurich. (however the speaker didn’t have the job and didn’t proceed to Zurich.)

Other Mistakes

Not risks that are taking

Lots of students always write the same, safe, things they always write. To master advanced vocabulary and structures you must use advanced vocabulary and structures!

Being boring

It’s hard enough to produce a well-structured piece of writing with good vocabulary that fits the content. But understand that the examiners read hundreds and a huge selection of essays and most of those are particularly boring! If you make yours interesting (though the style, unexpectedly good vocabulary, possibly even a tale or two) the examiners will be really happy and you’ll be REWARDED.

BACK AGAIN TO TOP

Students often ask if I offer a writing correction service. Well. to be honest i am not to motivated to accomplish this right now. You ought to find a trained teacher on italki instead. View here to read about italki. (Watch the video with David to hear more info on writing correction.)

Q – Do I have to use spelling that is british?

A – No, no matter. However if you employ American spelling, be consistent during your writing.

Q – How important is spelling and punctuation?

A – It is pretty important – it won’t be a big deal if you make a trivial mistake. In the event that mistake stops the reader from understanding what you mean then you’ll definitely lose points.

Q – How important may be the expressed word count? What goes on if I write too words that are many?

A – the expressed word count is helpful tips, not a rule. But you will write about 220-260 words if you do the task properly. In the event that you write 300 words then you might have written plenty of stuff its not necessary. In the event that you write 200 words you might have forgotten something.

DO waste that is NOT into the exam counting what number of words you have written! And do not add or remove words simply because of this word count – it’ll come out clumsy and weird.

All of that said, when you are practicing for the writing section, I recommend you adhere to the suggested word count.

Remember that the computer-based exam will automatically count just how many words you are using. Handy! See this article to learn pay for essay more concerning the CAE that is computer-based exam.

Q – I know I need to use complex sentences to obtain a grade that is good but I’m concerned about making mistakes. Could it be easier to have a simple text with no mistakes?

A – Cambridge says that students who make mistakes while wanting to use complex structures will get credit for trying (provided that the mistake does not stop the reader from understanding).

Q – My handwriting is terrible! No-one can read it! Am I going to lose points?

A – No. Your handwriting is not too important. Just be sure it can be read. Also, you don’t need to rewrite your text (and you also don’t possess time for you rewrite it) – if it’s got plenty of bits crossed out, don’t be concerned. Every student’s writing looks the same!
